Seeing is Believing

Have you ever imagined a story coming to life as you read? Have you ever painted pictures of the scenario of your favorite book in your mind? Visualization is the answer! It is a very powerful strategy where in our brain forms mental images while we are reading. Through this, reading becomes more dynamic, engaging and easy to understand. Imagine the difference it makes if your mind gradually paints a vivid picture as you read through each word. That’s what kept our 6th graders busy in our Reading class last week – visualizing.

你是否曾想象过，在阅读时故事能跃然眼前？你是否曾在脑海中描绘过自己最喜爱书籍中的画面呢？这便是“可视化阅读”，它是一种极为强大的策略，在阅读过程中，我们的大脑会形成各种画面。借此，阅读变得更加生动有趣、引人入胜，也更容易理解。想象一下，当你逐字阅读时，脑海中会逐渐描绘出一幅生动的画面，那种感觉该有多棒啊！这就是上周我们的六年级学生在阅读课上进行的练习 —— 可视化阅读。

We kicked off our journey into visualization with an interesting example from nature: the looper caterpillar, which camouflages seamlessly into its surroundings. Through this, students had to rely on their imagination to “see” the hidden caterpillar. After reading each paragraph, students were encouraged to create mental images of what they had just read. Incorporating visualization in our reading class not only helps students engage more deeply with the text but also strengthens their memory, fostering a richer understanding of the material. 

我们以大自然中神奇的尺蠖虫为例，开始了一次有趣的视觉之旅。尺蠖虫能够巧妙地融入到周围环境中，几乎隐形。学生们不得不依靠想象力去“看到”隐藏的尺蠖幼虫。每读完一段内容，老师都会鼓励学生在脑海中构建出刚刚所读的画面。在课堂中融入可视化，不仅有助于学生更深入地理解文本，还能增强记忆力，促进他们对所学内容形成更深刻的认知。

Our kids’ journey to visualization has just started! Seeing truly is believing, and visualization opens up a new world of imagination for our students. In the future, we hope that they will instinctively employ visualization, with independent and fresh thinking across different topics. Make sure to stay tuned for more reading strategies, such as previewing and predicting, to further equip us with a comprehensive toolkit for effective reading.
