Will it Float or Sink?

Have you ever wondered why some objects float while others sink? Our third graders shared this curiosity and were eager to explore like everyone else. Initially, students predicted that heavier objects would sink while lighter ones would float. To test this, they compared a grape and a watermelon. Most students assumed the heavier watermelon would sink and the lighter grape would float. To their surprise, the opposite happened - the watermelon floated while the grape sank!

Demystifying Air Pockets

This unexpected result prompted further investigation. The students learned that certain fruits, such as cranberries and watermelons, contain ‘air pockets’ that allow them to float. Although these air pockets are invisible to the naked eye, the students grasped how they play an essential role in helping objects float. Their curiosity led them to make additional predictions about which fruits and vegetables would sink or float, testing their hypotheses by dropping various items into the water. Many of their predictions proved correct! Clearly, the students’ hands-on learning experience allowed them to understand scientific concepts effectively during this lesson.

Do Apples Sink While Oranges Float?

Eager to continue their exploration, our third graders shifted their focus to apples and oranges. They were particularly interested in how different conditions and properties of objects would affect their buoyancy or ability to sink or float. They began by dropping the whole fruits into the water, then cutting them in half, and finally peeling them. They discovered that some fruits, like oranges, could sink when peeled. This led to a deeper understanding that the skin, rind, or peel traps air, which helps the fruit float when intact.

“Berry” Delicious

As their experiments centered around floating and sinking, our third graders became excited about the food they would prepare on cooking day. Students anticipated using a fruit that floats—cranberries! Known for their small size and air pockets, cranberries are perfect for floating in water. What better way to utilize them than by baking delicious cranberry muffins?

So, from science exploration, our students are now ready to shift into another exciting adventure inside the kitchen. Their excitement could no longer be stifled - they were eager to use the kitchen tools and learn the ingredients needed for baking. Working collaboratively, they sifted, mixed, and folded the batter to create the tastiest muffins possible. The thrill of baking these muffins was heightened by knowing they could take them home to share with their families as a special "thank you" treat. Our proud Little Einstein Chefs packed their muffins with care, eager to share their cooking creations with their family.
