Exploring States of Matter
Our fourth graders are becoming little Einsteins as they delve into the fascinating world of edible science. They began their journey with a catchy States of Matter song, learning key terms through attentive listening. This fueled their exploration of solids, liquids, and gases and how they transform. Through interactive discussions and demonstrations, our students grasped how matter changes states - melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, sublimation of dry ice, and gas deposition.

Understanding Physical Changes
Our young Einsteins further explored how matter can change form without altering its substance – known as a physical change. Students melted ice cubes into the water, observing that while the shape and size changed, the substance remained the same. Some students tried accelerating the melting process by rubbing the ice with their hands or soaking it in water.
In another experiment, they crumpled and flattened water bottles, noting that the material stayed constant despite changes in size and shape. This experimentation sparked brainstorming about creating physical changes in sugar, leading them to discover that dissolving sugar in water forms a liquid solution that can later recrystallize into solid sugar.
Creating Sugar Crystals
The highlight? Making sugar crystals! Students began by crafting their own seed crystals – sticks dipped in water and coated with sugar. Next, they prepared a saturated sugar solution, adding vibrant food coloring for an extra pop. After a week of eager anticipation, they were thrilled to see their tiny sugar granules transform into sparkling crystals.

Candy Cane Cookie Fun
This exciting experiment set the stage for a delightful culinary adventure! The students were thrilled to learn they would be making candy cane cookies—a treat as sweet as their sugar crystals.
The students identified the necessary ingredients and tools while refining their culinary skills. As this was their third cooking activity, their progress was evident. They skillfully mixed ingredients to create dough, practiced kneading, and twisted the dough into candy cane shapes. Bending the dough into “J” shapes to form canes quickly became a favorite part of the process!

Sharing the Sweetness
The colorful, sweet cookies brought smiles all around. Students eagerly shared their creations with friends and teachers, showcasing their generosity and sweetness.
These budding scientists and chefs are honing their skills both in the classroom and the kitchen, and we can’t wait to see what their next culinary and scientific adventure will bring!

Until our next CSC class, enjoy and keep exploring!
